When Historic Lewes was tasked with the creation of an oral history project in collaboration with the African American Heritage Commission of Lewes, the pathways were not always clear or easy to traverse. Generations of ignored, overlooked, and often purposefully hidden history had to be explored, exposed, and attended to honestly.
The need to preserve buildings and artifacts is easy to justify. They’re visible evidence of the town’s past. But equally important is the on-going effort to collect and preserve the less visible artifacts, the memories and oral histories of the people and communities that helped make Lewes what it is today.
The Voices Heard Booklet is the exhibit guide companion to the Voices Heard exhibition. This booklet will bring you deeper into an often-untold history showing you multiple rarely seen photographs ranging from the 1900s to present day.
